Wyoming, June, Snow…Duh
What a day...basically what I enjoy (and miss due to lack of trips in recent years) the most about a road trip is the nuances of the land, coupled with some where I have never ventured. Today, we covered 503 miles, two states, a mountain dew, three bottles of water, a zinger, some sugar wafers, and had enough water fall on us to partially fill Lake Bonneville (google it, no hyper link here). As the kids napped, I enjoyed the drive to Pokey, then winding in the lush green hills around there as we wandered east in continual drizzle. So green, so pretty...so relaxing. No kids with a breathing aparatus or choking down penicillin, nor flat tires...just the "Service 4WD" light (sigh). I ignored the last part...
At Soda Springs, the Tahoe needed fuel, as did the kids who were snozzin -- nearly three hours for Norakate, two plus for Tbird. We ate inside the gas station/A&W, Nora scarfing down a hot dog faster than Ralph could. Then we ventured north on ID-34 toward Etna, WY, a journey I have never taken. Five miles north, the dark blue we had been chasing dumped...and dumped. We had a solid downpour for "hours.". Around Jackson, we were plowing 1-2" on the road as the temperature hovered around 50.
Further along, as we veered east from Jackson Lake, the rain continued, but the elevation climbed (seemingly inversely proportional) as the temperature dropped. Finally, near the summit of Togwotee Pass around 9500 feet, the solid, heavy downpour thickened, finally turning into huge snowflakes as the temperature dropped to 33.
Ahhh...I love Wyoming. We zipped through, and the skies relented about 20 miles from Dubois. We continued our journey, arriving at 18:51, and quickly headed off to feed and water the angelic children.
The kids blew off a good deal of energy in the motel room, but calmed down around 22:00 and are both now snoozing comfortably. Off with Granny and Gramps after breakfast tomorrow !
Workin Men
Tyler and Dad spend some time clearing the drive and sidewalk on a wintry evening in Boise. We went to bed Sunday night to clear, cold skies. Snow started to fall in the wee hours of the morning as Eros awoke Flossie for a trip outside, and by 8AM there were a couple of inches blanketing the landscape. I shoveled things clear, and we were off, returning to the regular week-day routine for the first time in two weeks as the snow continued to fall during the day. Arriving home, the girls hopped out, and Tyler suited up, grabbed his equipment, and began shoveling alongside me. While I was making my pile in the grass, he decided to pile up his snow in a section of the driveway, and after becoming quite comfortable in his snow wear and boots, he was shoveling snow out of the street and building up his pile. So far tonight, it is remaining cool, but temperatures are supposed to warm into the 40's and will likely melt off our hard work shortly.
